So, you have to get from Holme House to Laycock do you? O-kay then.

You’ll not miss the beginning of this one – the road rears straight up in front of you. It starts steep … and gets steeper. Don’t be surprised if what looks like a corner not so far away takes rather longer to reach than you’d expect. At least it’s a simple challenge – the road goes straight up the side of the hill and you just have to deal with the gradient, which goes well over 20% in places.

When you do, eventually, reach the vicinity of the corner you’ll see that it’s not wide enough for two cars. I just kept riding and hoped for the best, which turned out OK on the day. If something is coming the other way and decides to be difficult then you probably will have to get out of their way.

Once around the corner, things get a bit easier (it’s still 14%, but it feels oh-so-much-flatter) and you can relax slightly.

The left hander is an unusual one in that the gradient on the inside of the corner is less than the gradient of the two straights on either side of it. It’s a welcome relief, but it’s not enough to give you any semblance of momentum into the final haul to the top.

This is one of those climbs which sets its stall out at the very bottom and maintains its character all the way to the very top, but this also means that you know you’ve done a great job once you’ve made it up there!
